We all want to get engaged. We all want our relationships to be productive and full of joy. We all want our joy that stems from our engagement to be contagious. When I look at people who are engaged I see someone who is not overwhelmed by their day-to-day tasks. I see people who are encouraged and not afraid to offer encouragement. I see people who have integrated all important aspects of their lives. Some of these indicators of engagement are self-explanatory and others not so much but one thing is for sure…we must get engaged before signs are evident for others to see or benefit from them.

There are 3 steps to getting your crew engaged.

  1. Meet psychological needs. Is there a level of connectedness or a feeling of autonomy in your team’s space? If not, start paying attention so that you might start seeing how other’s needs being met benefits you and your vision/mission.
  2. Address the limits of body and mind. How often do you need to take a break? This may be different for everybody and we value people for their differences. We can function if we allow for people to check in with themselves. In fact, we function more efficiently when we acknowledge needs (see step 1). This may look like doing 25 jumping jacks every hour or loudspeaker broadcasts to remind folks to drink a glass of water. …speaking a couple of my needs into existence. LOL
  3. Integrate work and life. Do you show off your work family to your actual family? Why or why not? We spend the majority of our time at work and with growing technological access the line between work and life is blurred. We check emails on our phones after work. We take our children to the doctor during the work day. Balance is only possible when there is a defined line. The growing blur means that personal needs are included in your workday and your workday is defined by you. You schedule everything equally. This can be complicated. I promise a work life integration post for a deeper dive soon.

I dare you to take the time to get engaged whether you are home or in the office. Determine what this means for you. Jamila Willie Coaching is available for consultation and/or coaching.
