I hate to say it but sometimes I feel like a fraud. I feel like if I act on my dreams or share my skills I will only be met with insurmountable challenge or even worse, someone will tell me I’m not what I say I am. The reality is you (I really mean me) are the only one in the way. If you’re feeling like a fraud or an imposter, it’s probably a sign that it is time to take that next step.
“I don’t know what the next step is.” We tell ourselves this lie all of the time. It is a bad habit. We must change our mindset and grasp what we really know to be true. I know that both you and I are more than capable of breaking through every lie or barrier that is keeping us in a place of doubt. I know what I have done. I know what worked and didn’t work. I know where to find necessary information. I know what to do. We have the power to realize the truth…imposter syndrome is a lie!
3 Tips to help you Overcome the LIE
1. List all of your accomplishments. Do this regularly.
Making note of your awesomeness lessens the need for praise. It allows you to leverage your strengths and separate them from what you don’t know or negative thoughts. This allows you to make room for or designate a place for negative thoughts to temporarily reside. Recognize that our negative thoughts and feelings do not make up our entire being, they don’t negate our skills and abilities, and they don’t change who we are. When you believe in yourself others will follow suit.
2. Only do what you want.
Don’t do more than what you believe to be enough.
Others will ask things of us that are beyond either what we want or outside of our known skillset. Create and stick to your boundaries. You are the designer of your destiny. Don’t let someone else scaffold your dreams or goals.
3. Focus on pleasing your audience.
This may seem counterproductive or seem to be a distraction to acknowledging your greatness when really it is an acknowledgment that we are able and that we don’t live in a bubble outside of society. This enables us to be humble and curious about others. By focusing on service, we have no need to question whether or not we are being fraudulent in our efforts. We are being our authentic selves without worrying about how we look. We are only worrying about the skill or service that is being offered.
Food for thought: What if we all chose to give our authentic selves…our best selves to those we love, like, and/or interact with…..
